July 2024 JTS America Newsletter
In this scorching summer, floods, droughts, wildfires, and other disasters caused by climate change are occurring all over the world. Today, thanks to the support of our sponsors, JTS is providing essential aid to countries in need, both through emergency relief and long-term plans. We are sharing the latest updates on our recent activities.
Second round of emergency relief effort
In May, we carried out our second emergency relief effort of the year in Sri Lanka, where the entire nation is suffering due to the economic crisis. Local volunteers, who have inherited the expertise of JTS activists, came together to provide school supplies to students in three regions and rice to low-income and extremely impoverished households. We delivered school supply sets to a total of 3,000 students and 50 tons of rice to 3,160 households.
Completion Ceremony of the Women’s Dormitory at Preah Sihanouk Raja University
JTS supported the construction of a dormitory for rural female students at a Buddhist university in Cambodia. After a year of construction, the completion ceremony was finally held. The university president officially declared July 4, 2024, as the ‘Day of Hope,’ expressing lifelong gratitude to those who made this hope possible. We hope that the once impoverished female students will grow into women who lead lives filled with wisdom, knowledge, and service.
A New School is Coming to Gatttung Village!
In Gatttung, a remote village without electricity, the county office, the education office, and JTS are planning to build four standard classrooms (which can be divided into seven), teacher accommodations, and restrooms to provide a better educational environment for the children. This will be the largest school that JTS is building in 2024. Children from three nearby villages are already attending this school, and the number of students is expected to increase once the road paving is completed.
A Letter from Bhutan
Last winter, Bhutan Nuns Foundation (BNF) expressed their gratitude for the winter supplies and sports equipment provided by JTS. They thanked all the supporters who helped the nuns stay healthy and warm throughout the winter.
