[Sri Lanka] Emergency Relief for Flood Victims in Matara
The flood, resulting from a prolonged period of heavy rainfall from June to October 2023, caused damage in Matara, Sri Lanka.
The relentless rain caused a lot of damage, and the concerns of the residents poured in. However, amid these challenges, there were individuals who had not lost hope and they extended a helping hand in providing relief. Let us now share the story of the local volunteers from JTS Sri Lanka.
The volunteers visited the damaged areas to conduct on-site assessments. The most critical needs for the affected residents were food and soap. Many residents were unable to prepare meals as their homes were flooded. Local volunteers gathered and prepared relief packages filled with rice, lentils, textured soy protein, chili powder, curry powder, sugar, dried fish, tea leaves, coconuts, soap, and detergent.
From transportation to distribution of relief supplies, local volunteers, community centers, and residents worked together seamlessly. Even in the midst of large crowds, the residents waited patiently and took turns receiving relief packages. Witnessing residents expressing their gratitude with bright smiles, we felt a deep sense of appreciation for being able to help.
This relief activity was initiated by local volunteers who approached JTS. They actively took the lead in all aspects of the operation, from preparation to the final distribution, based on JTS principles. These dedicated local volunteers, who selflessly serve their neighbors in times of distress, have become true members of the JTS team. Please continue to watch for their contributions in the future.
