March 2020 JTS America Newsletter
We are anxious and fearful because of the unexpected outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020. JTS America has been working to help children in underdeveloped countries, who need help the most. Thanks to your donations, we were able to provide food and essential supplies to refugees and victims of disasters, to provide medical support to patients, and to provide education and school supplies to students. We deeply appreciate your interest and support.
Supported storybooks to Sujata Academy
JTS America donated storybooks to Sujata Academy last February. Heena Choi, a volunteer and supporter of JTS America, suggested that she would like to donate storybooks about Buddha and best-selling Indian storybooks to Sujata Academy.
Two additional supporters joined the plan. Heena selected the books based on her discussion with the teachers at Sujata Academy and sent books. The teachers were very happy to receive the books, which were delivered separately several times. It makes us smile to imagine the children enjoying the books.
Supported 2020 Philippines project
JTS America sent $66,000, the first round of support, to the 2020 Philippines project. JTS Philippines is working on supporting village development, building schools, running a school for the disabled, supporting school supplies and uniforms, and creating leadership programs for village leaders. We have many project plans in 2020 as always. Thanks to your support, children can be educated, and residents can be financially independent in underdeveloped areas.
Provided 5000 masks to Daegu
After a Daegu medical association asked for help on TV, a staff member of JTS procured 5000 masks for them. The JTS Chairman of the Board of Directors, Ven. Pomnyun, went directly to Daegu on February 27 to deliver the masks as soon as possible. The secretary general of the medical association, Sung-woo Kim, sent many thanks to JTS and Ven. Pomnyun for the donation.
JTS fundraising campaign in Vancouver
In February, we had the first JTS fundraising campaign in 2020: making kimchi together at the Vancouver Jungto Dharma Center. Twenty-five people, including children, gathered in the early morning and made a large amount of kimchi. It was physically demanding work, but everyone enjoyed volunteering and sharing food. The support money that we collected through making kimchi will be used to provide food to hungry children.
